Oh...If only it were that easy. Since every 8th grader is now offering hosting, you're going to have to research each and every host I'm afraid...or go read for a few hundred hours @ www.webhostingtalk.com/index.php :D

I thought it had also migrated down to 7th graders now. :D
Anyways, yes be very careful who you decide upon. The research you do beforehand can save you much headaches later on. The link zoobie posted is a great place to learn about many hosts.
Also make sure you know the difference between a webhost and a reseller.
Also read through the sticky note at the top of this forum:

great advice people :)
here is some more
[edit] sorry i forgot to add. get the 5gb package and 'upgrade' to 30 as you need it. Your host should let you do that and it will save you money :)
anyway, heres a method for finding hosting:
1. find a host that you looks ok
2. visit http://www.webhostingtalk.com/search.php?s= and do a search on them to get some opinions. Sometimes no results are found which can be a good or bad thing.
3. continue to step 4 if you are still interested in this particular host. Otherwise go to step 1 :)
4. email the sales department and ask some questions. Here are some good ones.
- how long have you been in business?
- do you actually own your servers or are you using reseller accounts?
- what happens when/if i exceed my bandwidth charges?
- what method of payment do you guys accept?
- can i have a trial period?
5. check their response and make up your mind about them. Here are some things to remember.
As others have stated go with hosts with actual servers and not reseller accounts.
its up to you if you want to go with a company that started yesterday however i would recomend one thats been around for at least 6-12 months.
A good host should allow you to upgrade plans for free if you exceed you allocated monthly bandwidth. Also their bandwidth overage charges shouldnt be to expensive. Rackshack.net's is $1.50 per GB but it will differ from host to host.
you should be able to get a trial period with the host you choose. i know we offer this and have had a 100% conversion rate. Use this free month to test everything out. Test the support, speeds and anything else you wish.

There's actually a "Host Request" forum @ WHT, too. A great filter when asking is to use "in biz for 2+ years"...heh heh. :D

Well, yes. Sounds good, but.... If everyone insisted that their supplier (of anything) had been around for at least 6-12 months, then the supplier would never get started at all.
A bit like the job ads for bottom-level posts that that demand 5 years' experience.
You can argue that a new provider is likely to be better - they have to try harder to gain a foothold in the market.
Worth saying again - in this life you mostly get what you pay for, and pay for what you get. If you buy on price then don't expect much in the way of quality or service.

My 2 cents: I fully agree with the advice given. Research, research, research and then some background checks and questions.
While my work runs their own servers, I do have hosting provider experience with two: InterMedia (http://www.intermedia.net) and Interland. I would highly recommend InterMedia -- good support, servers seem secure and reliable. I would stay away from Interland like the plague -- very poor support, servers definitely not secure.
Good luck...

Avoid oneandone (www.oneandone.co.uk).
Nightmare company, unbelieveable, they even have a counter of the gullable fools they 'serve' . :D
nearly took them to court over trying to charge me, for somthing i had cancelled, so I blocked the transaction, so they got angry, and sent me threatening letters about debt collectors and things of the like.
Customer service needs reshaping, almost as bad as NTL (UK ' ers will understand ;) )

This story does not surprise me: Web hosting company confirms hack attack (http://msnbc-cnet.com.com/2100-1002_3-5076050.html?part=msnbc-cnet&tag=alert&form=feed&subj=cnetnews)

..and then you could do all this research and still have to switch hosts in 2 months...:D
