View Full Version : Google releases On2

As I mentioned elsewhere, Google has released their On2 video codec for use in HTML5 video. This is an improved version of Ogg/Theora and also patent/royalty free, unlike H.264. Firefox, Opera and Chrome will support On2 while Safari and IE9 will support H.264. I would almost suspect that even Apple might start supporting On2 soon.

Also known as VP8, here's a better explanation (http://blog.mozilla.com/blog/2010/05/19/open-web-open-video-and-webm/) from Mozilla.

Isn't this branded as WebM? I believe Microsoft have confirmed support in IE9, though I don't know about Apple.

I was sent the WebM link which I thought was the announcement, hence the Mozilla link. WebM is part of Google's effort but the big news was them releasing VP8 (On2's codec).
IE9 will NOT use VP8. Safari does not but I'm hoping they will. VP8 is an improvement on Ogg, runs as well as H.264 (iirc), runs on all platforms and FF, Opera, Chrome. It's royalty/patent free, unlike H.264.

IE9 will support WebM if a codec is installed on the system, according to Microsoft. I doubt this would be a massive barrier to adoption because of the fallback nature of the <video> element. I don't honestly think Apple would adopt it without doing so for their mobile devices too.

Yes, I just now saw that in this article. (http://arstechnica.com/web/news/2010/05/google-opens-vp8-codec-aims-to-nuke-h264-with-webm.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss)

On April 29th, Microsoft said this:
In its HTML5 support, IE9 will support playback of H.264 video only.
On May 19th, Microsoft said this:
In its HTML5 support, IE9 will support playback of H.264 video as well as VP8 video when the user has installed a VP8 codec on Windows.
