i don't know if its true or not but some people say the emulators itself are illegal too but then other people say they aren't and only the ROMS are.
I think emulators are useful since i like to try out really old school games and you can't rent those anymore and they are really hard to find and rare..plus expensiver then normal games. :|

I don't know one or another, some stuff falls into the free area too, I guess it depends

I'm afraid of getting a virus. I was thinking about using something like vmware and running windows xp or ubuntu linux in emulation and using that to do most of my computing to protect myself from viruses.

the safest way would be to use a Linux livecd for critical tasks such as banking since a cd cannot be altered by viruses or such.... each time you load it up, it's fresh. even if your main system is compromised by a virus, you load up the livecd and your safe still to do banking....
