how widely supposted among browsers is the span tags which is:

All current browsers support <span></span>. Most older browsers support them as well.

I did a little research and found that <span> was added to HTML 4.0 back in 1998 which makes it 5 to 6 years old now. Considering that NS 4 supported it you can see that it's pretty much standard html by now.
