Where do I change the property to change my .mpg files from playing inside IE with quicktime to open up and play in the external Media Player?

Do you follow me?

Tools => Folder Options => File types.

Mouse, that doesn't seem to work. I tried that as the first thing, and if I open an mpg from a folder or my desktop, it will open in Media Player, but if I try to open a link to an mpg it will play it in my IE. How do I change that?

it sounds like the link goes to an imbeded player which is why it would open in IE and not the external player. You would have to save the file first to do that as far as I know.

That's just it.

It's not sending it to any embeded player! It links directly to the .mpg file.

Click for File.mpg

a link like that should download the file to your computer and wouldn't just open it in the browser I would think you would have to find it on the hd and then open it from there...

Jason, well it opens up using IE and automatically puts it in a embeded quick time window. So finding it on my hd is not an issue.. I know it's there, but I want the mpg to open in media player auto...

I don't know, if I were on a windows machine I would test this, but you could try to set the preferences of the player to do a streming media for hyperlinks...other than open in the browser... that is my last guess...

Select open in a new window, that should open the linked /mpg in the media player rather than an IE window. Otherwise, save the mpg to the desktop first and watch it off your desktop.

You could uncheck "Play videos in web pages" and maybe check "Don't display online media in the media bar"

Well... I don't want to have to download the mpg directly like that, I want to click the link, and have it open in media player, then buffer.

And I will have to test that "Don't display online media in the media bar" later, but where do I uncheck "Play videos in web pages"?

To All,

The best way to open a file with a certain application instead of the default one is as follows:

If you wanted to open jpegs with MS Paint, or Adobe Photoshop for example, locate a jpeg on your HDD (can be any jpeg), hold down the shift key on your keyboard and click the right button on your mouse on the image, you then have an extra option on the menu that opens up. This option is called "Open with..." Click on this option and select the programme you wish to use to open up the jpeg... in this example you would select MS Paint, Adobe or any other similar programme. After selecting the package, there is an option "Always use this programme" By selecting this option, the jpegs will always open in the programme you choose.

Please note that the programme you select would open the file. So don't associate an image file with a media programme or vice versa.

Similarly, if you downloaded an mpeg and saved it in C:\Temp. Follow the above and select Windows Media Player, select the option to always use this programme and you will always open up mpegs in WMP.

Good Luck!

Sarah

Holding shift for this function is only required in Widnows 98, and possibly 95. For Windows 2000 and Windows XP, if you just right click a file, there is already the ability to select a file to open with another application. Infact, for each type of file extention, it creates a list of programs you have used to once open that type of file before, and you will not have to search through the list again.

Thanks anyways Sarah, but this wasn't the direct problem. I am sure other people might want to find out how to do that, that are on a Windows 98 OS.
