Good luck getting an experienced code for that price. You get what you pay for.

$10-$35? After all, I could just find a shoutbox online and integrate it. I just need minimal things done to it.

It's that arsey attitude they have which I find really annoying. That bit of the O.P's post quoted above, for example. If it's so bloody simple, why don't they code it themselves? Then they go and insult us by telling us what they believe our time and experience is worth. They really do know how to dig a hole for themselves...

Apparently someone took the job. Likely an overseas company...

I have to say, in my opinion it's the oposite, no matter how much people seem to offer for what seems like a small job, "the pros" seem to say the price is far too low.
On a site I read a thread asking for an installation of a forum, smf i think it was with a few premade mods, they offered $50 and "the pros" said good luck getting some one experienced to do this.
Frankly, I've had a fishing forum online since the age of 13! It's immensely simple and anyone who has any sort of computing experience could have done it in minutes!
Goes to show how highly some of these people thing of themselves!

You try coding up an AJAX shoutbox from scratch and then tell me if you think $35 dollars or so maximum, (which is what the O.P offered), is a suitable amount. It was a piss take, and that's putting it subtly. If you think that's a good offer, that's your choice. It was an insult, in my opinion.

Actual posted job aside (which was rather low), there is "overhead" time-wise to be considered. I have to deal with "you" (the customer) to get the specifications, log in/FTP to your host, install/mod, test, debug, etc. and that adds up. There is a "hassle" fee built in to most people's quotes on small jobs, even if you - or they - don't realize it. There is generally a minimum threshold below which a freelancer is probably not interested in working. This is why you don't hire a professional contractor to change your light bulbs. Sure, it'd take him 5 minutes, but is that worth his time coming out there for $5? No.
Also, depending on the circumstances, you might be paying for someone's free time, which is usually more valuable to them than their work time.
Just some food for thought.
