Using Excel as DB

I am trying to connect to an excel spreadsheet like you would connnect to access. I am trying to display the data in the spreadsheet.

I have tried using the code on asp101.com ....
http://www.asp101.com/samples/xl_data.asp ... to no avail. I am getting the following error:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e21'
ODBC driver does not support the requested properties.
/bltest/admin/xl/xl_data.asp, line 32

Anybody have any luck doing this?
