I am not a cs major

Hey everyone, I do not post very often, but I was just curious about something.
I am a biology student and will be graduation at the end of this summer. I am not very optimistic about getting a job in biology and feel like going to graduate school is just going to give me a mound of debt. Coding has been somewhat of a hobby for me. I know HTML, CSS, javascript, and am learning php and mysql right now. I mainly do things like design wordpress themes and create simple sites for bands. I also made a site for my dad's business. Is it possible to land a job or internship somewhere without being a CS major or is this very unlikely? I really want to expand on my knowledge, but feel like i need to work on bigger projects to learn more and practice my skills. I know that i should have just majored in CS but it's a little late for that now. I'm already gonna graduate. What do you all think?

My experience is that it doesn’t matter if you graduated in computer sciences or anything as long as you’re good in whatever you do (especially if you’re freelancing). I don’t have a degree either and yet, I’m making a living by doing web development. I learned the basics in a web design class at the university but the rest I learned all by myself.

The beginning isn’t easy, I’ll have to admit, (but it ain’t easy in any field) because nobody knows you yet and you probably don’t have many projects to show (although you having done a few themes and sites already is a good start). What you definitely need is a portfolio website where you showcase the work you have done and then search the web for job offers. You can also start building a portfolio and expanding your skills by doing some pro-bono work for non-profit organizations or local assosications. It won’t earn you much money in the beginning (if any at all) but at least you contribute to the community and hopefully do something useful to make the world a little better. :) And you’re building your protfolio which puts you in a better position when you apply for projects later on.

Web design is an industry in which experience matters far more than qualifications. As Stephan said, your portfolio is the only sell you get at potential customers. Be wise with it.
