waiting to setup something like a support chat script

I am waiting to setup my own support chat window and wish to find out what people think will be the best technologies to use, php, javascript or something else.

I have looked at a lot of the 'fantastical' scripts on my server but all come with a load of other stuff that will just confuse my inital thought of making it easy for the end user. with out the signup and login and all that stuff.

can i get a few suggestions on what others think i should use to do this.

Done right, you can create a solid one using PHP and Javascript. Use JS to poll the server for new messages or other updates.
