Okay so I'm essentially a beginner and want to learn how to program. I would really like to start at the very beginning and would want a good book for beginners that has a decent amount of exercises BUT I need to know which language I need to learn first.
So here's what I'm looking for: I want to design a website that uses user-submitted content heavily. I guess the closest example I could come up with would be something like Wikipedia where content can be submitted by users (ie pages and information about the subject of that page) but also a sort of user-rating and reviewing like IMDb.
Obviously both of these websites are very advanced (at least I'd assume so) and what I want to do is a bit smaller-scale BUT I assume I'd need to learn HTML but a server would need to do basic calculations based on user-submitted ratings and whatnot.
Does this make sense? Which languages should I start off with? And any books (online or paperback) you'd recommend?
