View Full Version : Question about Servers

So my domain is on shared hosting. The site crawls at a snails pace, and it lags or goes down about 3 - 4 times a day. I've been putting up with it for 3 years.

I need my own server, however don't know anything about them. I saw this server,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3804399&sku=C122-4662

If I bought something like that, does that mean I can transfer from my shared server onto my personal server and it'd be faster? I do understand this isn't the fastest server, but what I am asking is, will the website load faster, not lag as much, and not crash, if I had one of these?

Your sites speed is also based on your connection? What kind of speed are you seeing up and down?

Looks like a decent server and a good price.

I am on high speed DSL, and usually the server page load time is around 2.45 to 3.30

But for the past week it's been 12.40 area, a full 12 seconds to load a page. I don't know if my internet company downgraded my connection speed, or if my webhost's server is being lagged.

Check your speed here

http://www.speedtest.net/ (http://www.speedtest.net/)

If you are hosting your own your more worried about your up speed

What kind of traffic or bandwidth is your site using a month?

Its probably your webhost server which hosting service are you using

The speed test gave me this.

5.03 Mbps download speed
0.76 Mbps upload speed
Ping 43 ms

I am using hostmonster.com for hosting. I disabled my registration about 6 months ago to work on all aspects of the site. Right now including me is 3 people who login each day. Maybe 10 viewing the site a day.

With .76 up your not going to be able to host your own website effectively. Here at my house i have 55 Mbps or so down and 4 Mbps that would probably allow me todo it. Id check with your service provider and see if you can get more upload speed. If you had cable internet id tell you to buy a Motorlla SB6120 cable modem that help my speed out tremendously went from 5 down to 55 down and 1 up to 4 up

http://www.numion.com/calculators/units.html (http://www.numion.com/calculators/units.html)

.76 mbps is only
0.095 MBps (megabytes per second ) which would be really slow if your pulling up big webpages

If your hosting your own website for the first time Id recommend http://www.wampserver.com/en/ I just started heading down that path for my works website we are going to be hosting our email and website soon and it was really easy to get is started. But we are going to be getting fiber internet soon

I am not looking to host my website, I just want to get a dedicated stand alone server to run my website on.

So you are looking to buy a server and then put it in a co-lo? If you want a dedicated server, most hosting companies offer such services which can be the easier route to take.

Co-location? Nope I was planning on running it at my house.

I looked at those online servers, but they are expensive around $99 a month. Why pay that when I can get the same thing for $500 - $700 and not have to pay monthly?

Well that server you linked to is rackmount, unless you are going to spend the money for a rack, get a server in a normal tower case. And pollardhimself is correct, you'll may need more upstream bandwidth. The exact amount depends obviously on your site and how many people will be viewing it but you might want to move up to at least 1mbps which is about 100KB/sec.

If the site is going to be fairly serious, consider getting a business class Internet connection so you are promised better reliability and have better technical support.

And for the server I would strongly recommend getting a UPS for it.

As far as dedicated servers costing $99 a month, you get more than just the hardware, that usually includes regular backups and of course if any hardware fails, they replace it and such. And you have a high speed connection and things like that which can make it worth the cost.

Refresh my site a couple times and see what kind of speed you get.

I think your thinking of it the wrong way, if your running your website on that server you would be hosting the website and serving it up to everyone out on the web. Domain Name Hosting is a service that redirects people when they type in http://www.rodgame.org/ to an ip address which is what ever person has your website running on there server.

And your website loads up fast its your connection, try cable if you can dsl sucks.

And it could also be your location if your aways away from the server that host your website it could be pulling it up at a slower down speed.

Do you know where your website is hosted if so do a test on a server at speedtest.net thats near where your websites server actually is

you website is hosted in

RODGAME.ORG - Geo Information
IP Address 74.220.207.90
Host rodgame.org
Location US US, United States
City Orem, UT 84097
Organization Bluehost
ISP Bluehost
AS Number AS11798
Latitude 4029'68" North
Longitude 11167'61" West
Distance 9739.08 km (6051.58 miles)

see you can type in http://66.102.7.103/ in your browser and it takes you to google.

you cant do that for yours because they probably are using virtual host routing because there hosting more that one domain on that ip

UT is far away from VA.

I just don't know what to do, I can't afford $99 a month.

Your website loads fine for me. I tried it last night and again just now, I would say it is normal.

UT is far away from VA..

Not in terms of the Internet. My website on a different continent from me and it loads fine.

I live in Virginia also, Chesapeake to be exact, cox cable is only about 40 bucks a month for the regular internet and if you get the cable modem i recommend you will have awesome speed. What provider are you currently using?

I assume your using hostmonster.com, At certain times it can get busy and there servers can get overloaded, if you cant get a faster internet try a different website host.

My internet is Earthlink/Embarq.

I also have hostmonster on another domain and it lags just as much. Seriously the server crashes twice a day for about 30 minutes. I just want a reliable server.

if u want to try a different host http://byethost.com has good hosting for fairly cheap compared to some, i have been using them for a year now and i do not believe i have ever once in the past year had any server downtime nor any server lag

The price is right, so that is a good thing.
