When visiting the welcome page of a website i am required to enter a password for entry. When first visiting the webpage i was invited to install a reader which i think was a Java rader of some kind. Somehow that reader appears now to be disabled and the box where the password entry needs to be made is a plain rectangle with an active x box (?) in the top left corner. the site is still active but I can no longer access the site any ideas?

Possibly it was corrupted or it was only temporary and you should download the control again.

Decided to attempt to view the site in question from a mates laptop and once you reach the welcome page it requires that - Java Virtual Machine- be downloaded. But when i get to the welcome page on my machine i am not prompted for this ..so the question if anyone can help now is..where can i download Java Virtual machine as so far i cannot see it available...but then again ....:D

You should be able to download JVM from here: http://java.sun.com/getjava/

Also JVM comes with the Service Pack 1 Update for XP... After you install the service pack you still have to tell the OS that you will be using the JVM...

Two steps need to occur...

First, in IE:
Click Tools --> Internet Options --> Advanced
Locate the Microsoft VM Section and make sure that JIT Compiler for virtual machine enabled (requires restart) is checked.

Second:

Click Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs --> Set Program Access and Defaults --> Custom
Locate Choose a default virtual machine for Java and make sure that Microsoft Virtual Machine is checked as well as Enable Access to this program...

Restarting after the first is a neccesity but I would suggest restarting after the second as well...
