input field with font-editing buttons

I want to create an imput area with all the font-editing buttons like on this and many other forums.

How can I get the changements in the imput field when selecting some text and clicking on the buttons (bold, italic, smilies, center text, ...)?

How to programm such a input field?

It is possible to create this yourself using javascript - but TinyMCE (http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/) probably gives you everything you could want and more - and it's freely downloadable.
