Are there any services anywhere which offer free cron services to update certain pages every few hours?

free independant crons??duniyadnd 04-18-2003, 05:45 AM Are there any services anywhere which offer free cron services to update certain pages every few hours? Duniyadnd krycek 04-18-2003, 05:57 AM Probably not. Not that I have heard of, anyway. In fact, not many hosts offer cron jobs full stop. But, I do :) ::] krycek [:: duniyadnd 04-18-2003, 06:20 AM Why don't they (hosts) support cron? Any idea?? Thanks Duniyadnd krycek 04-18-2003, 06:30 AM for many hosts, it's perceived as a security risk. There are control panels (such as Cpanel) that allow the user to administer crons through a web interface, but Cpanel is expensive. For many hosts, the crons have to be set up directly using SSH, which is a BIG no-no because often they don't know how to control it, hence they don't offer it (which is actually quite sensible in some ways). Then there are other reasons, such as them just saying "no" :p lol ::] krycek [:: Phool 04-19-2003, 01:01 PM i think external cron would be a BIG security 'no no'. Although its an interesting concept. Im sure if you explain to your hosts's support team they will enable a cron job for you if its really warranted. I know we do :) |
