Ok I don't know much about this, which I why I am psoting here....
I am looking for a decent card (am on a budget so not uber expensive or have a 1001 features, just does the job and does it decently)., that will record from a standard VHS player, also what would be the simplest program that does a decent job for this.
Any suggestions would be welcome, I have been looking around on newegg and well am a little puzzled by the different connections and such atm

Are you looking for a tv tuner card for a laptop or a pc? If you don't know much about computer hardware then I suggest the one for the laptop because uses a single usb port. Also how much are you looking to spend? If you have an s-video port on your computer and an s-video out on your vcr then you can do what is done in this video

Well do you intend on watching/recording normal cable onto your system? Also what OS do you have and do you live in the US?

I've had good experience with Hauppauge cards, they are well supported in Windows and more importantly Linux.

Old Old home vhs cassettes (family moments and such), The os it'd be going into would run Windows XP Pro, but good I also run Ubuntu pretty heavily but that'd be a second in this case since its more for my wife than for me,

Then yes I second what OG said. They are known to produce decent tv tuner cards. Their usb versions don't get decent reviews but those reviews are mixed between good and bad ones. And the software you need will likely come with whatever card you get.

yeah i had a Hauppauge card and was very happy with it. gave it to my nephew and it still works works fine. very good software that came it also, i could set up to record at anytime i wanted, plus lots of other nice features the software has. Comes with it when you buy one of their cards. recording from a vcr would be no problem.
i use a ati tv wonder 750u, 1080p. $45 its a usb, pretty damn good quality
