For this site (http://cli.gs/UWGYzq), does anyone know the fix to make the images side by side in IE 5 and 6 and the red top bar side by side in IE 5? Or, what to call the problem to know what fix to search for? Debugging IE not one of my fortes!

Which leads me to the question....why hasn't W3C put their foot down and demanded that all browsers follow certain standards? Sure would make our job a lot easier.

Thanks much in advance!

Hello Sculley,
50% widths don't always work the way you expect. Some browsers end up with 50 and 51 %'s which makes the float drop you're probably seeing (I don't have IE6).
Try floating the left div and then margining over the right with no width. It will just use the remaining space. Should work.

Like this -

.homeAnimalCommunication {
float:left;
width:50%;
text-align:center;
margin-top:3.5em;
}
.animalcommunication {
margin-left:44em;
}
.events {
margin-left:26em;
}
animalcommunication a, animalcommunication a:link {
color:#FFF;
text-decoration:none;
font-size:1.2em;
}
.reiki {
margin-right:28em;
}
.lcol {
width:46%;
float:left;
padding:0px 10px 0 0px;
}
.rcol {
float:left;
width:44%;
padding:0px 0 0 30px;
}
.lcol2 {
width:52%;
float:left;
padding:0px 10px 0 0px;
}
.rcol2 {
float:left;
width:42%;
padding:0px 0 0 30px;
}
.quote {
text-align:right;
}
.quotebottom {
font-size:1.2em;
}
.quotebottomt {
font-size:1.2em;
text-align:right;
}
.small {
font-size:12px;
font-style:italic;
}
.homeSoulJourney {
margin: 0 0 0 50%;
background: #A9C8DC;
}

Thanks Excavator. That didn't work. The blue image slid over to the right but in IE 5 and 6, there was blue on the top, then huge space with bg color, then blue image on bottom. In IE 7, it added tons of blue space between top and bottom of image. And, it didn't fix the top red bar break.

You mentioned you didn't have IE 6. Check this out: http://www.my-debugbar.com/wiki/IETester/HomePage. Someone sent me the link. You can look at all versions of IE 5-8 in one place. It just takes a couple minutes to install and so far it works great! Just for Windows though, I would guess.

Seriously IE5 though? I can understand maybe IE6 but IE5? Why bother coding for IE5? Computers still running IE5 likely can't handle the bells and whistles of today.

So it fixed the float drop. Your gaps are a seperate issue. Look at margins you have coded in there, like the 1em bottom margin on .homeSoulJourneText.
