Im trying to build a footer using this article: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/footers/
But I can't get the footer to stick to the bottom. Im sure this is a simple problem by I can't seem to straighten it out. Help!

Ok, so I have found that the #supertainer div is taking the height of the browser window and not the height of the content. Any suggestions how I can change this?

It seems that tutorial your following is showing you how to make your footer stick to the bottom even when there is not enough content to push it down there.
Do you want your footer at the bottom of the viewport and a scrollbar for your content? That's different.
If #footer is 100% wide, why do you float it? Elements are floated so we can put stuff beside them. Replace float:left; with clear:both;
By the way, good job on the valid code! ---> Except for the errror in your CSS! It should be height: 100%;

Just to add, that may not be the best way to get a footer to stick to the bottom even when there is not enough content. It seems a rather overly convoluted method to me.
This (http://matthewjamestaylor.com/blog/keeping-footers-at-the-bottom-of-the-page) is a very simple, straightforward, and flexible method of keeping your footer down even with little content. I think it is also a much easier tutorial to follow too, and the technique is easier to adapt to various layouts than some other methods I have tried..
