Help with tunnelling and SSH

I would like to communicate with the shared mysql server provided by my ISP by tunneling, running the php scripts on my local machine with only the sql portion of the script travelling back and forth. I understand this is unacceptably transparent to hackers. I have tried setting up putty but wasn't successful. Anyone with experience with this to guide me?
