Hi all,
I hate to ask this question because i've seen it everywhere and I know that quite often there is no simple answer but i have to ask.
Why won't Google index my pages?
No, please don't go to another thread. Please read me out.
I've researched and researched. The answers i've seen range from "well all you need to do is....research some more" or "all you need to do is create a good website". I've tried to get my code looking good with various seo tools. All my H1, H2 and meta tags and keywords and titles all with the right number of letters and without repeating keywords too often. And putting myself out there in forums and articles and blogs and pinging and social bookmarking and god knows what else.
My site is half in English and Half in Malay. The Malay pages, no problem they have been indexed but the English pages..... I've been visited by Mountain View several times but nothing.
Am I so blind that I am missing the wood for the trees? All suggestions (of a pleasant nature) will be gratefully received.
Thanks, Phil
Oh yeah, my site is at www.grammarproof.50webs.com

Did you submit your site to google? http://www.google.com/addurl/
Also, seeing that your site is a subdomain, Google probably doesn't show it. I dunno, check here:

Hi Thanks for the reply.
Yes i submitted to Google, Yahoo, Bing, Dmoz. I have made a sitemap and robots text which i keep updated whenever i change something. I verified with both Google and Yahoo also with metatags.
I'm not sure that the fact it is a subdomain is a problem as a few of the pages which are in Malay have already been indexed.
I just feel like i'm missing something obvious. All the text is my own so no duplication of others work. All the titles are unique as are the individual page descriptions.

I think if you leave out the space between "site:" and the start of "http" you get this result.

Further to my last - I've just sent a reconsideration request to Google. Not sure if that is a good thing or not but i got to try something eh.
Any thoughts?

How long ago was the submission?
Limey10
11-26-2009, 02:40 PM
Well it was only about 6 weeks ago which i know isn't a long time in the world of submission but the Malay pages were indexed within about 2 weeks.
I also have another very small (English) site which was indexed within 2 weeks completely. And i used the same methods to the letter to do that one. It points to something not quite right i'm guessing.... but what?

Were they linked to?
Limey10

Sorry Apostropartheid, i'm not sure i understand the question, Were they linked to each other or by subject? Neither, the other site is about the sale of a pub in Canada. Yes i have very diverse subjects.

Curiously enough, the Pub Sale Site does not have any links.
But with the Grammar Proof site, i put it in free ads, business directories, forums, facebook etc.

google have no clue that you have mixed content in two language and therefore ignore the pages in english. I guess that's the main problem. The solution is to put each language on a subdomain or to use content negotation.

Actually the content is the same, only translated from English to Malay (by human, not google translate). The main index page is English though, so I don't understand why that would stop Google seeing it. Does it not visit the index page first and then follow the robot txt?
If i swapped the language pages around until they discover all pages and then swap them back..... is that naughty..... or fiendishly clever?

Google does not like website hosted in free web hosts, you may also want to remove the link from your first post , this post will rank better in google than that of your website.

A few people have said (and i thank them for the answers) that Google doesn't like subdomains or that they don't like free web hosts.
But that doesn't explain why Google would index half of the site (in Malay) but not the other half (in English)
I'm sorry if i keep fishing for a definitive answer but surely there must be something other than that?

not seeing pages is the problem, their relevance.

no, don't help. Google index is dynamic, if a page is relevant today must remain relevant else will be removed.
it career is also right.

Google will index some pages on a site but rarely
all.
Im sure you use 1 of the top 3 search engines
often.
How often do you run across sites hosted free
other than blogs?
Get a hosting account and you will be better off
imho.

As everyone else says ... it's your domain name.
You need your own domain name.

The word relevance seems to be thrown around a lot. I'm no where near as experienced in web building and seo as many of the members here so i'm keen learn the meaning of the word relevant in relation to websites.
Half of my site (in Malay) is clearly relevant and indexed, the other half in English...not relevent.
When i type the words "English Grammar Proofreading" into Google i get 2 1/2 million results. I believe that my content is richer and fuller than any of the top 3 results and from my dictionary, more relevant to the phrase i typed. So what is the Google meaning of the word relevance? It feels like a complicated french recipe..... just add unions, tomatoes and a splash of relevance to taste.
Thoughts?
I have had other subdomained or free host websites and without exception, they have all been indexed in their entirety. Having said that, I can see how a hosting account would be more attractive to a search engine, but it hasn't affected my indexing in the past.
Thanks all for answering, please keep the thoughts coming. :D

Thanks oesxyl. I don't wish to sound ungrateful but in my first message, i said that I have researched and researched.
webmaster tools - I already have. Thats how I know which pages have been indexed and where I submitted my sitemap.
15 minute SEO - Talks about keyword density, title tags, H1 tags, Alt tags, Meta tags etc. All of which i have been through.
Spider tools - Just told me - This page looks like it is optimised for:
grammar [7.3] * grammarproof [7.4] * proof reading [8.7] * proof [8.3] * reading [7.1] (which pretty well defines my site.
seotoolset - tried all the links. Only problem found was that i have 56 keywords instead of 48
It seems that no one on Coding Forums has the answer to this one.....and the frustration continues......

Wait now, maybe I missed it but have the pages been crawled but not indexed? Are you certain first that these Enlgish pages have even been viewed by the Google webcrawler?

Yep, from the 224 visitors, (many of which came from Digg and Stumble)
I was visited by Mountain View on Monday 16th November at 09.00 and
Tuesday 3rd November at 19.58

Hello,
From your sitemap.xml page, I cut and pasted the following links...
http://www.grammarproof.50webs.com/malayindex.html
http://www.grammarproof.50webs.com/contact.html
http://www.grammarproof.50webs.com/fees.html
they all gave me the error:
Error 404: Oooops, this page cannot be found!
Likewise I tried..
http://www.grammarproof.50webs.com/index.html
it came up, but not in English.
I also tried them through a couple of proxy servers, such as
http://www.docoja.com/red/
and got the same result.
If Google is seeing the same thing I'm seeing then that would explain why
some of your pages aren't being indexed, they all point to the 404 error page
and look like duplicated content.
Regards,
Doug

Hi dougnbr,
Sorry about that. I decided to bite the bullet today and have transferred all but my Malay pages to a new site at www.grammarproofing.com You must have been looking when i was mid-flow so to speak.
So now I have the unliked English pages all looking pretty in one place, Verified with Google and Yahoo, Sitemap etc etc....
Will be interesting to see if it gets picked up.
(its been a long day, but hopefully worth the effort)
I shall keep this thread posted on developments but thatnks to all that answered. Sad that i couldn't get a definitive answer but i guess it is what it is eh.

You're right. The new site works.
Ran it through the W3C Validator
http://validator.w3.org/
There were a few errors, but nothing that I could see that would keep you from getting listed.
Keep us posted. Good luck.

After you get your website moved and the code cleaned up, be sure to submit it via:
http://www.google.com/analytics/
AND
http://www.google.com/webmasters/
These are NOT THE SAME.. so do both if you haven't already. I find Analytics very helpful.
Good luck,
Kim

Looks like you got there after i fixed most of the errors but some i couldn't figure out at all. (I think i'll save those for another thread)
And Profitweb. I hadn't submitted to Analytics yet so thanks for the top-tip reminder. Its done now.
If i read the recipe correctly, i pop the contents into a google oven, set the timer to wait, and sit back until the traffic starts to roll on in. (just hope i put enough yeast into the mix)

Well, I agree that it is strange and I'm glad I followed the advice. But if you are going to be fair, I was told that the subdomain site would not get indexed because it was a "subdomain"...... However, half of the site (in Malay) "did" get indexed which poo poos that reasoning.
Very clever reply mlseim but if you can show me where I was told why half the site was indexed and the other half not.... i will be really impressed :-)
Regards as always, Phil

Only half was indexed because the integer values of the sub-domain DNS
file allocation is at the limits of the search engine robot overflow expressions.
Well ... actually ... I have no idea.
But that sounded like an impressive sentence :)
