View Full Version : Source code "encryption" ... oh pur-lease ...

Check it out - http://www.digitalamt.co.uk/advhtmlenc.html

And they're making some dangerous claims:

# Protect your javascript/vbscript almost any script, e.g. so users/hackers can't discover your security,

# You can write your own password protected html pages, using plain javascript, or use the built in wizard,

So ... will they accept liability when someone "hacks" my site because I trusted their "encryption" ??

btw - took me 2 seconds to view the original, unencrypted source of one of their "encrypted" pages, with this bookmarklet:

javascript:document.body.innerHTML=(
'<xmp><html>'
+document.getElementsByTagName('html')[0].innerHTML
+'</html></xmp>'
);void(null);

It is the easiest to make money off people's stupidity and ignorance, and there is no law against it... just an obsevation...

On a more serious note... I can relate to one's desire to protect javascripts (though encripting is about the worst way of doing it), but what is there in HTML code that is not displayed on user's screen besides a few <div> and <p> tags (I'm talking about a properly designed HTML, when all formating information is put in an external CSS file)

brothercake ask if they will accept liabliltiy when you get hacked, then make a test site and let someone hack it and then sue them.

if they say no, tell them there product don't work and you don't believe it does.

or if you wanna go out.

make a php function that sends a spam email to every possible address(cost a lot of brandwith) telling them that it is flawed.

I don't see any claim of accepting liability but they do make this claim:

you don't have to worry about users accessing your site source, because it will be encrypted

That could be proved to be a fraudulent claim as evidenced by brothertwinkie already.

It sounds to me like they are a small group of amateurs trying to make money off of people's stupiditiy and ignorance as Vladdy suggested. They try and make themselves sound like a big company but when you look at their list of products the only one they actually have is the HTML encrypter.

What kind of company that wishes to have a professional image would put up a page stating:

[this page is still under construction, check back soon, thankyou]

well, i don't think you can sue them for having incredibly week encryption. all they said is that it's encrypted. they didn't say it was unbreakable. and anything we'd do to get around at encryption, even to demonstrate how week it is, would simply label us as "hackers". ::shrug:: sometimes it's best to just let the idiots screw up on their own.

Hmm. As far as I can see, it's one guy - the one mentioned as the domain owner, who also pops up in the license agreement, who's making up to 25 a shot out of a couple of javascript functions.

People posting their "look at my source-protected page I made" scripts up on forums is one thing; (fair game, mostly :)) but he's making money out of it.

I see what you're saying, joh6nn; it IS *encrypted* - but I reallly think that the Trades Descriptions Act would have something to say about misleading consumers in this way.

An encryption technology - which is what he's marketing his product as - is being discussed on a public website; not in the sense of "look at this interesting way of using javascript as an encryption tool"; not even as "oh look, another one. I wonder how long it'll take to crack it"; but as "here's a source protection product, and here's the few lines of code it took to render it useless."

I hope the guy checks his server logs; I'd like him to notice us, and come over here to try and explain to his peers exactly what the hell he's playing at.

Talking of one born every 0.1 second, I recall a thing from a couple of years ago.

I was in my very early days of building a website, (feel like I dunno much more today :( ) and I needed some photo of a particular large hotel.

I rang them to seek permission and they said I could use them from their paper brochure but I couldnt get them from the web because they were encryoted.

I let it go ( on the phone) and then sent by email her online pics which even I had been able to downoload - and actually, prior to the phone call. She was most surprised coz they were 'supposed to be secure'.

I wondered that myself, they don't got their own webpage using their own product. And maybe I'm blind but I didn't even see a "see an example" page that showed an encrypted page on their site. These guys are just like that one guy we talked about a while back who wrote that article about how bad freelance web designers were and how he had "special" technology that prevent code theft.

I downloaded the trial version and encrypted a page with it. When I viewed the souce of that, it was what you'd expect - a great big document.write(unescape(lots of hex characters))

Run the boorkmarklet and out comes the original :)

I actually did email the guy and told him his product is fundamentally flawed and that I cracked it in 2 seconds. Strangely, I haven't had a reply

I think you should do what scroots suggested earlier on, by asking if they would accept liability for hacking, and NOT what mattover-matter suggested, by sending spam to every possible e-mail address. ( What a stupid idea! )

I think that's enough off-topic-ness for one thread .... :p

Wait one more:
2 threads could have been merged into one thread without the need for the other... All of my "double posts" have a substantial time difference! (well most of 'em)

I got a reply to my email looks like they have realised "encryption" isn't the best choice of words:

Thankyou for contacting DigitalAMT Technical Support.
You have contacted the wrong department, however, we are still able to answer your query.

Advanced HTML Encryptor, will soon change to Advanced HTML Encoder. This is the only change that will occur soon. Don't worry you can still purchase the product without any problems.

At the current time, we do not have a sample yet, when our next website upload is complete, there should be a sample on the HTML Encoder (not Encryptor) page ready to be viewed.

We recommend you download the evaluation version, no limits, just a nag screen, and test it out yourself. The encoding supported is UUENCODE. It will keep out most people, but not determined hackers.

Using Javascript alongside the encoder, here is what you can accomplish:

The source cannot be viewed,
Site Templates cannot be copied,
Protects the whole site, or a single page,
Using Javascript, you can disable right-clicking on the page

Don't worry, after you purchase the product, if you check back regularly, you will find, the product will contain new javascript code/templates to protect your site, such as no right-clicking, or site selection, etc.

We do recommend you try out the evaluation version before you continue any further. We hope you enjoy using this product.

If there are any further questions, do not hesitate to contact info@digitalamt.co.uk

Kind Regards,
DigitalAMT Technical Support Department.

what if I want to copy some text to use it as a link but I couldn't because I could not right-click? What if I owned a site that gets 200,000 viewers a day, ahh wouldn't that screw you over.

but not determined hackers.

Not what you said before  So, is someone who can type a code into a text-box and click "decrypt" a determined hacker?

<yawn />

The best ecryption is sohpistication. I once made this script that rendered images outa codes, it looked reallly reallly cool. I opened the script to anyone, because it was soooo complex. One sec, I will have to find it and show it to you. I be back in a jippy.
