You'd need to enclose the text inside a div, like

<div id="content">Consectetuer adipiscing elit. Nam pede erat, porta eu, lobortis eget, tempus et, tellus. Etiam neque. Vivamus consequat lorem at nisl. Nullam non wisi a sem semper eleifend. Donec mattis libero eget urna. Duis pretium velit ac mauris. Proin eu wisi suscipit nulla suscipit interdum. Aenean lectus lorem, imperdiet at, ultrices eget, ornare et, wisi. Consectetuer adipiscing elit. Nam pede erat, porta eu, lobortis eget, tem...</div> and hen set a suitable margin on either sides, like

#content{
margin-left:150px;
margin-right:150px;
}
Have a look at better 3 column fixed layout at http://bonrouge.com/3c-hf-fixed.php

This is normal since your sidebars are floating in the design and have auto height. You have to specify a heigth for the sidebars. and if you need full variable height, then we are in the same boat you and I :P look my post "100% height float problem"
