View Full Version : Why is my cell height being ignored in IE8?

It works in FF and Chrome, but not IE8.

.legBioTableColHeader
{
background-color:Aquamarine;
height:14px;
vertical-align:top;
text-align:center;
font-size:12px;
border:1px solid black;
}

To see the different behavior, here is a link to my application (it will require Google Earth plug-in if you don't have it already).

http://www.sovereignstates.net/StateLegislators/VSLegislators.htm

Be sure to look at column headers in the lower window below the map. In IE8, the headers are too high.

I can't help since I don't have IE but the first step to make your life easy is to validate and fix the errors:

http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sovereignstates.net%2FStateLegislators%2FVSLegislators.htm

I usualy design for firefox and test with other browsers but from my experience until now if the page was valid and look as I want in firefox I didn't need any fix for IE 8, only for lower versions.

I have been wanting to validate, but it tries to validate my jscript and gives me too many errors. How do I get the validator to stop doing that?

or put the code into an external file and use script element to load it.
I prefere second so I can easy reuse the code.

don't warry about the numbers of errors, there are fewer then the validator say because some of them trigger others.
if you start fix them from the top and validate each time you will be finish very fast

Great! Will give it a try.

Well, that reduced it to only 9 errors, but in reviewing them, I can't see anything wrong.

Further, it occurs to me that since I am using dom manipulation to dynamically create and modify html, the validator would not be able to catch any errors there because they are concealed in script operations.

yes you are right about generated code. I use to build a pure html + css page before, validate and fix problem and then I reproduce what I need with js or server side as I need.
the CDATA section ending tag must be not only ]] and I'm not sure if the rest of the errors don't come from your doctype, check if is correct.

put one or more spaces after start and before end cooments tag. Browser parser are usualy confused about this:

Back to the CSS issue above, when I comment out the "height:14px;" line, I find that Firefox displays the column header exactly as IE. This tells me that IE is ignoring that line. But why???

I posted the complete CSS style block above. It all looks as it should to me.

I guess the problem is in first and second column where you have rowspan="2", the rest of the cells try to fill the gap. I would put the text in a div and style it as you do but I would not use rowspan.

Crazy thing, that was!

I had to set the height of the bottom row columns 3-5. Fixing the height of those prevented the top row from expanding downward automatically.

Good enough. Glad it works....
