Transfer files between computers using internet

What would be good free software to use to transfer from either Ubuntu or Vista (my computer) to Windows 7 (friend's computer) via the internet? It is okay for both computers to add software to facilitate this. The amount of data I want transferred totals to at least 100gbs.

Unless you each have 30-40mbps bandwidth, that would take a really long time. You would be better off loading it on a hard drive and physically transferring the data that way.

But as far as transferring the files over the net, you could use a VPN like OpenVPN to connect the two computers.

You might want to keep an eye out on your ISP also. While there is nothing wrong/illegal about transferring data like you are wanting to do, some ISPs still get mad and call you, threatening to cancel your service if they see that kind of volume leaving your computer. "Innocent until proven guilty" doesn't work in the ISP world, I had "two strikes" as the guy on the phone told me, with my previous ISP before moving where I am now, and all I was doing is transferring linux ISO files.

Your fastest route might be to put data on an external drive and snail mail it to the destination :)

Either way, moving that much data can be difficult. Hopefully your ISP is friendly, and if not, they can be pretty fun to argue with about the legalities of file sharing and bandwidth usage.

You could also check it dropbox, its a file/folder synchronisation tool, pretty neat, links in my sig as well :-D

You could potentially avoid the isp issues if you were to ftp your fields to a server from where your friend can d'l them.
