500 error in puttytel

I'm using puttytel and following the instructions on
http://www.mysql.com/articles/ddws/11.html
to create a database. But whenever I start with this line:

mysql -h 66.220.25.237 -u myusername -p

it doesnt work. I keep getting the same '500 MYSQL not understood' error. Is the syntax incorrect?
