hit area for link images

I'm trying to create buttons (tabs, essentially) for non-rectangular images placed closely together, like this: ////// without the space in between. The normal rectangular hit area won't work here, obviously. Is there something I can do in Javascript (or another language) to help me? I'm trying to avoid Flash, although I know it's possible to do it there.

you don't need to use a rectangle, rect, circle, and poly are all viable options.
