View Full Version : What is "about:blank" and why is my page doing it?

Hello all. I've never had a web page do this to me until now. When surfing in the past, I've come across this on countless sites and never questioned it before until it happened to one of *my* pages. I went looking on the web for info about this before I posted my question, but couldn't find anything pertaining to why a blank page opens (even though you can't see it opening), a browser tab briefly appears in the taskbar (labelled "about:blank"), the status bar says "Opening page About:blank", the page stops loading for a few seconds, and then the about:blank tab is gone and my page is there. Does anyone know why my page is doing this? Or maybe I did something in the coding to trigger this?

I think I know what you're describing, for example, go to http://javaboutique.internet.com A blank window briefly pops up then disappears. I've always thought this was done intentionally by the webmaster, however. Do you have full control over your web space, or are you hosted on a free host?

Hi George. No, I have my own server -- well, ya know, I pay for it, but it's not with a free web host or anything like that. I control what goes on my server. Interestingly enough, as I was surfing this evening, I came across the about:blank situation a couple of more times and the blank:about "pages" turned into popup ads!! Now I *know* there's not a shred of a popup ad anywhere on my site, however, on the page in question, I do utilize dozens of JavaScript popup layers that act as custom windows or panels, if you will, and some of those layers have iframes in them that call external .htm files, of course. I'm wondering if that's got something to do with it? Hmmmm ......

Something is putting those popups there. I'd check with your hosting company.

Hi Spudhead and thanks for your input. Perhaps I worded myself incorrectly in my above message. For clarification, I was surfing other web sites yesterday evening and noticed the about:blank page thing happening and on those other web sites, they turned into popup ads. However, this doesn't happen on every site I've been to that has the about:blank page thing happening. Sometimes it just stays as a blank page and then sometimes it goes away in a few seconds, like I mentioned in my first message. And if the about:blank button in the taskbar does remain, clicking on it produces nothing. No blank browser window opens and I have to right-click and select "close" to make the button go away. And when I do, the web site I'm visiting remains as is. Nothing adverse happens to it nor does it close because I closed it's accompanying about:blank page. So I guess what I'm saying is that the about:blank pages don't all behave in the same manner.

Interestingly, an e-friend pointed out that IE gives you the option to set your default home page as about:blank. For what it's worth, I use IE6. A connection perhaps? More things that make you go "Hmmmmm ...."

about:blank is exactly that... a blank page - with nothing outputted from your machine to the browser (ok.. just <html></html>) (about: is a local thing...)

try this. about:<b>Hello</b> will make a blank page with hello in bold on it..,. about:home will beam you to your home page... etc...
