I'm trying to decide if it's worth my time downloaded the text-based browser Lynx to test mine and my clients' websites' browser compatibility.
Yes or no?

Remove the CSS from your document and you have essentially the same thing. I've never figured out how to compile Lynx anyway. It's simply not worth the hassle.

Hm. I have lynx on all my machines. It's hardly a hassle. Using lynx will show quite nicely how well your site is laid out. It's a good tool to use. You'd be shocked at how difficult some sites are to navigate.

Is Lynx even available for Windows? I looked about on the site but it seems a bit outdated. You'd think it'd be made a bit easier than a list of tarballs.
Is it really that different from a stripped site or one which has a zeroed stylesheet applied? I can't imagine why it wouldn't be.

some people don't fix things if are not broken, :)

I would say it depends on the site. The handful of times I've used lynx it has been either to modify network settings on a firewall or router when I am SSHed into a server or when I need to grab a link for something when installing something on a server and I don't have easy access to another computer with a GUI.

Opera has some nice text browser emulation options.

You can tell a well laid out site in Lynx at a glance. It looks like someone's neat, organized term paper. A badly laid out site looks like garbage thrown at the screen.

But I could just as easily view the website in Opera's text-based mode?
