I have seen many times that the search engine used to search emails in gmail is worst of all .
E,g i have the attachment name as manager123.zip then if i search for manager , then that won't show up unless and untill i search whole whole manager123
The problem is if i know the email adrress partly then it won't find emails for that name unless i know the complete word.
Any ideas if i am missing something

Does it simply look for whole words? Like 'manager and 123' separately. I don't know much about this, but I presume it could be useful for searching through the titles of emails without getting results you don't need. Quite pointless for attachments and email addresses though.
For example if the email was called 'manager 123', it would detect the word manager using the search? Just my guess...

the email address is manager123@gmail.com
If i search for manager , then nothing comes up but if i search manager123 then all mails come up
Its strange that the best search engine can't improve search in email

Seems silly, but maybe it requires you to enter wildcards yourself?
manager* or manager% etc

if so then it's not silly but rather powerful since regex is a very powerful, juust takes a little getting used to

I just had a look at your right, but you could get around this by using an imap client and doing a wildcard search in that

I was only thinking why they can't solve that problem . Is it technically difficult or are there any implications for that.
Doesn't make sense that if they use the all Artificial Intelligence in their apllications , why can't they improve their gmail

no not all that difficult, but I guess they're trying to keep it simple, if you allow regex how do you escape those type of characters easily for the clueless user.....
They might fix this with a future version but for now just use thunderbird or such as an imap client to do this as in nearly every other respect gmail is a superb service

Point taken :)
I was using the search feature yesterday to clear out the thousands of emails I had. Couldn't fault the search, it pretty much did everything I asked of it. Helped me out greatly.
My approach yesterday was to search for criteria in the subject and content of the email, rather than something like an email address. Generally you can find something else unique to certain emails rather than just the email address itself. Most people use signatures these days and any emails from businesses or organisations generally have their name in the title of the email itself (amazon, play.com etc).
Maybe in the future they will look at an advanced search, but until then I find it pretty decent.
EDIT: There are some more options for advanced searching in gmail. Can search a wide array of fields.
