Does this place have an IRC channel? if not, has it been considered at all? does anyone thing it would be a good idea?

as far as i know there is no chat.
i dont think it would be a good idea, maybe if we did just that, problem i see is people jumping in asking questions when most of whats said could be on the boards ... im afraid it would defeat the purpose, plus we dont have to be on at the same time.

it could be intresting, but again it could be bad.

I also think it's not a good idea...
400 people all trying to get help for their own topics, for their own scripting language...

Not fun...

the only way an IRC channel for these forums would work, i think, would be if we did what i have previously suggested, and used it as a replacement for the Pit. otherwise, for the reasons that cg9com and Morgoth listed, it would be a Bad Thing.

I suggested it as not so much off a hardcore HTML/coding/scripting/ resource, but more light hearted talk and chat, with the occasional venture into development matters.

Also a good point...

Maybe it might be a good idea if it were only that...
And possible a java applet for irc linked off the front page so you don't accually need an IRC client.

If we get something like that, I'm sending an application for Mod of that.

hehe...

But there would deffinately need an op to tell people to post their questions on the forums and such...

thats the problem, i think because you could get a response instantly, to many people would ask questions instead of just using the boards, im up for trying it, but it may fail :(

I would give it a shot too... We should try it atleast, but of course, it might just be a complete failure...

LOL, I'll just do idle there (I always have IRC open...)

If we were to have the IRC room anywhere, I don't think it would be ICQ.com... We could use one of those large dedicated to IRC types of servers...

My suggest would be http://inteliinternet.com/ and get a channel with them...

IRC?, ..Buh! Don't think it'd work WAaaayy to many peeps from here in there and a talkin' all the time, that'd be madness! Personally I'd never go into it, and lets face it without me it wouldn't be worth it.. ;)lol

irc.icq.com...#wsabstract:eek: prehistoric!

If you ask me we should forget about ever having the pit and move on, I mean this has got to be like the 10000th thread this year regarding it lol. . .

Just the way I see it!

Either way, it's one of those projects you need to test to see the results...

Tells us 2 things!

1) The pit is something that everyone (mostly) wants.
2) The pit is something that everyone won't get any time soon.. lol :)

If that's true, then an IRC forum would almost be better.

It wouldn't be hosted by WA, and he wouldn't have to worry about it consumming bandwidth!

Really in all reality, it's up to WA, and now that I think about it, I am almost certian it wont work. This just isn't one of those communities!

I really like these forums. They are an excellent place to talk/get decent IT information. I like them even better as they are not watered down with general chat type sections, with people talking about frivolous things like what they got up to last night or what’s there fav pizza topping.

Am I right in thinking that this 'Pit' place is/was some kind of General Discussion section? If so, I think this place is much better off without it - keep things in the coding/development areas of discussion and not try to be something which you aren’t. But hey, I have only been a member 2 weeks :)

We used to have one. It was usually empty though :).

I think what makes this place what it is, is the fact that we don't have a general discussion forum!

We all have little off topic chats in threads every now and again but no outright chatting, IMO if we had a forum specifically for chatting, attention would go from coding into that like the old WA forum did..

Also we have private messaging nowdays so that and the small 1 or 2 post off topic chats we have are more than enough to keep this community ontrack yet giving some freedom and the chance to get to know each other a little bit better.

I can think of 3 'major' coding forums of the top of my head that have both coding and more general forums , none with any great issue it appears nor with that much diversion from the real purpose of the forums.

I dont think that a general chat/whassup forum in anyway detracts from a community of any sort and personally think it greatly enhances it.

But we know thats what I think & I hate to repeat myself :o but still manage to do so a fair bit

It could enhance the forums yes, but that all comes at a significant cost, in that like I said before (I think) many people will just post at the general forums, and that would be it.

Anyway, I thought that this was for IRC chat... - which I am pretty much against too, seeing as it will need ops on it all the time.

I remember the pit, it was great. I got lots of laughs out of it, I would be happy to see it back somewhat but its not going to happen because like ionsurge said, cost. If I remember correctly, half the monthly bandwidth usuage went to the pit, which is a lot and why it was closed. I think the board is fine without general discussion for now.

An IRC channel has some advantages but like said before it just wouldn't work because people would try to use it to solve their coding problems faster by asking on it and plus it would have to have ops on it 24/7.

Chatting is what ICQ, MSN, AIM, YAHOO are for.

It's been tried and tested a few times before. All failed within days due to many people being in different time zones. I don't think 'geek' irc rooms will work, due to most 'geeks' coding than chatting...

 Am I a 'geek' as I spend most my time with clients at the pub talking 'geeky' things? or am I just a drunken coder? :D

If the IRC room became more popular, you could expect that many people would be there asking questions, or chatting nonsense, and it will be a hell hole.

Not good.
