I have some mapped drives and UNC paths (\\servername\folder) setup so I can to access files on remote servers. Whenever I try to open a file associated with notepad or wordpad, I always get a very annoying prompt (attached picture).

This happened when I upgraded from windows 2000 to windows xp, so I can only assume it is related.

Look again, see the little checkbox in the lower left corner?

Uncheck that box and you won't get that warning for that type of file again. You will still see it for other file types unless you uncheck the box for those file types too.

What's your IE security setting?

I tried setting everything to "Low" security and go the same deal. It's strange that IE is even interfering with my mapped drives. I guess Microsoft has IE and explorer integrated a little too well.

edit: I guess I will try re-installing IE in a little bit.

Check with your administrator, they may have done something dumb like disabled that via policies without realizing that it's turned on for just about every kind of file by default in the newest OSes.

I asked the administrator and he said that the domain runs on NT 4.0, and it either doesn't have any policies set on it or it's too old to even affect these sort of security issues.

Just to test, I uninstalled Service Pack 1 and this fixed my problem. I'm inclined to think it is either a bug in Service Pack 1 or just some sort of security "feature" that I have to deal with.
