View Full Version : Map Viewer...(?)

Hello everyone...new member here:

I'm trying to find something and not having much success, thought maybe some of you experts might be able to point me in a direction.

Let me explain: I own a virtual airline website. We have a specific region of operations which encompasses an area about 750 miles, corner-to-corner. We have a good map of the region, but size is a problem...if you see the whole thing, you can't see any details. So I'm looking for some kind of program code (which I can stick into an HTML page) that would allow the users to shift quickly to a general area (up-down-left-right) and then be able to zoom in on that spot. The attached image is a picture that I swiped from the Google thing you get when you search for a specific address, and I'm showing it only for reference. Something like that would be ideal, but it doesn't have to be just like that...anything would be fine as long as it allows us to move around the big map, and be able to zoom in on a desired spot. And it has to be in some kind of code format (or a link?) that I fire with HTML.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize up-front for our own ignorance. I suspect the biggest reason we can't find something is that we don't really know what we should be calling it: Map view program? Image viewer or image manipulator?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Garry (and the gang at LewisAire Virtual Airlines)

you can slice the map if is big in few pieces, add few pictures on different scales and using javascript or ajax to make them change at the user request( zoom in, out, display some information, and so on).

I search for your site on the net. Did you have a "Site best viewed with Internet Explorer" there?
best regards

Thanks, OESXYL:

No problem with slicing the map into segments, and I appreciate the feedback...but this doesn't help me. I'm looking for actual code, not just a reference statement that "I can use javascript", or maybe ajax (which I have no idea what ajax is).

Yes, the website is at: http://www.lewisaire.com

Thanks,

there are few little problem here, :)
1. I don't know any reference about that, I have a site where is implemented something closer to that but I can't make the code public since I'm not the owner of the site.
2. Some times for small problems I agree to write some code to help users but I see this forum as a resource for learning not a source of code. There is a payed section of cf if you need to find someone to doit for you and a lot of members who know what to do.

Ahh, the real issue...$$$

Well, this is for a hobby website with no funds. I wasn't really looking to hire a programmer, I was thinking maybe someone here might now of a javascript program that already does this. Besides, it doesn't really need to be the code itself anyway...a link to something that would allow me to use our map as the underlay would work just as well.

No problem, I'll just keep looking around.

it's not a issue because we help people for free and nobody don't force as to do so. :-)

in that case just start writing the code and post specific problem on the forum. As I said, maybe I'm wrong but I don't know to be something about this subject, just pecies here and there on the net.
As a sugestion to start the project: Write a html page, slice the map and put all toghether and when you are stuck post on the specific forum, html, javascript or perl/php as you need. BTW ajax is html + javascript and a server side scripting language, so if you know each of then you know ajax even if you don't know what means, :)

best regards
