Does every popup have a name? I want to get rid of some as soon as they come up with some sort of setInterval. Can it be done? If no name, how about an index for them?

No, they haven't. You can try circling through all children of the window object, though, looking for the window[childname].window, but don't do that. Instead, use a proxy, popup killer or Mozilla/Safari/Opera to get rid of the peskies.

The reason I asked is because I want to kill popups for those who don't have those programs. Could I intercept the first popup of a page (window) upon loading? For example, free host popups via childname index?

http://www.brothercake.com/emoticons/nonono.gif you know it's not okay to disable the popups from a free host.

In older browsers, you could use window.open=function(){return {};};

It'll not work in anything modern, though. And that's as close to teaching anyone to cheat a free host as I'll go.

I only do it because they cheat me. They lie about my bandwidth. And if they lie to a freebie, they'll lie to a paying customer too. Justice is justice.

It's not really justice because they never promised you anything, did they? Does it say in your TOS that they guarantee .. well .. anything?

If they suck that badly then go somewhere else. I agree that pop-ups suck; that most free providers give poor service and continually move the goalposts; and that's because there's no future in their business model - people just don't click on ads enough to make the money it costs to host thousands of free websites.

But it's as it is; if you don't like it you have alternatives.

Please tell me some good hot alternatives that are reliable and you can recommend.

Free hosts? I wouldn't recommend any of them.

Quite a few dev communites will give you webspace if you're a member - obviously I wouldn't encourage you to join just for that reason, but if you wanted to get involved somewhere it could be an added bonus.

The bottom line is $$. And it needn't be much ... you could probably get a reasonable hosting package for $30 a year. I'm sure there are plenty of threads around CF on this subject ..

My host is a friend I have from my initial development of the ViewStyles bookmarklet - Nathan Steiner of web-graphics.com. I have no limitations put on me, but I guess if I took too much place, he'd complain about me. Other that that, I have tripod for file hosting and freedom to operate (f2o.org) for anything else.
