80GB thumb drive? Where did you get it? That's a really odd size for USB flash memory. Or is this not really a thumb drive and really an external hard drive?

If you don't want to spend the money just to see whether the thumb drive is the problem, borrow a friend's thumb drive and see if the file works on theirs. If it does, you know that your thumb drive needs to be replaced.

Either the flash memory or the controller is faulty from what it sounds like, neither of which is very easy to replace. You are better of just getting a new one. If you drive is new enough, it should hopefully be under warranty still.

I think you are right , its time for new one. I think its not good idea to have big data in USB . The Portables Hard drives are better.

one thing you could try is repartitioning and reformatting it, it might not help but then again it might, worth a try anyhow right?

there are several ways to do this, the easiest is probaly to liveboot ubuntu disk and then go to system->admin and choosing partition editor, and doing it in there
