good idea? possible?

currently I use lightbox for my image gallery and it requires thumbnails as well as the enlargements on the same page. (well that is how I have done it until now so the thumbs are able to be better focussed).

Now I want to take advantage of vector graphics so the same image is scaleable. Is this possible with photos?

what would be your recommendation?

No, this is absolutely not feasible with photos as these have millions of colors which would create a vector object for each and every pixel of different color which would make the file utterly large and probably at least even choke the program you’re using. Vector graphics are composed of many different shapes and for the web they would be done as SVG but they’d still need to keep a certain file size and photos are definitely not meant to be converted to vector graphics.

Your best bet would be to have high resolution images and scale them down.
