View Full Version : How long do you stay logged in, before getting tossed out ???

Hi there, everyone.

Geeez, I just spent 10 to 15 minutes explaining a javascript problem that I'm having, complete with a link to the problem page, code snippets, corrections that had been attempted ... and when I tried to submit I received a message that I wasn't logged in. When I backed up all of my text was gone of course. That's seriously frustrating !!! I don't think that I've ever been bumped out of a forum that fast before and I've been online since the 90s. So how long does one have after logging in, before the forum tosses one out again? Knowing this will help me "plan" my problem questions better in the future. Thank you.

That sounds about right, the session on the web server expired, 15 minutes is a pretty standard time for session timeout on the Internet. If you check the box to remember you when you login, it doesn't suffer from that problem since when the session expires, it auto relogs you in.

When you replied, were you typing in the reply box at the bottom of the thread of the advanced/full reply page?

I remember this happening when I joined these forums back in Ö uhmmÖ wow, 2006! Man, Iíve been here quite a while already.

But anyway. Back then there seemed to be a bug in the software because when it asked me to log in all my input was lost whereas I think nowadays it keeps your previously posted stuff when you re-login. Note: donít press the browserís back button, actualy proceed to log in again.

However, I may be wrong because Iím always logged in because Iíve probably checked the ďremember meĒ checkbox upon logging in (thereís still a difference between http://codingforums.com and http://www.codingforums.com but thatís another issue I complained about already without anybody listening :D).

Hi there. Well, I wasn't replying to anything. I was writing a new post about some problems that I was experiencing with javascript. Pretty certain that I checked "keep me logged in" but perhaps it has something to do with it being the first post after the first real login, or perhaps with me being overseas? Well, whatever the case may be, I'm out of time for now, so I'll have to rewrite all of that stuff later on this evening or tomorrow morning (it's already past 6 pm here).

About that back button ...
That's a 50/50 call. In some places logging in starts you over with nothing, and in other places using the back button does that. No way to know which way it's going to go for sure ... in advance ... until it's too late.

Being overseas has nothing to do with the issue, we have a pretty global community here.

If you hit submit when posting and it asks you to login, its better just to login instead of hitting back. So try logging in instead of using the back button next time it happens.

I had the same problem, by the time I had typed a decent post, it had logged me out. And too true if you press back, it's all gone for good.

However now every time i've done a decent post and I know it's pretty much gonna log me out when I press submit, I simply press Ctrl+A, and then Ctrl+C, which just selects all my text and then copies it to the clipboard.

So then when I relogin in i can just paste it in there cause it's on copy.

But obviously ticking the remember me box probably works, and maybe logging in from that page instead of pressing the back button. But it does log you out in a very short space of time!

I really really really HATE it when this happens. I tend to write up long posts in a text editor (not necessarily here at CF but in other online places) and paste them into the browser form just in case the webpage I'm posting to buys the farm. Sorry to hear about your loss... try it again

I just developed the habit of before posting, CTRL A, CTRL C.
