Depending on the instructor, I like the lynda.com stuff.

This link will get you a 1 week free trial and you can try out their videos for Fireworks CS4. Who knows, you may not need more than a week!

You’ve got too much money to spend, eh?

I don’t know of any books as I’ve learned all I know by doing and by reading online tutorials etc. but you may find something on http://www.fireworksguruforum.com/index.php?showforum=3
There are also many video tutorials on YouTube and the like, and especially on http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/ . Additionally I think there are some starting tutorials in the Fireworks help files as well

Thank you both. I will follow up your recommendations. The truth is that I bought Fireworks CS4 thinking that it was the latest version of Photoshop CS4. It was only after installing and registering it that I found differently. But it will probably do all I need.

I started out to do some shadow text, but so far I have not found how.

VIPStephan, The money was given me to celebrate my coming 84th birthday.

If celebrate is the right word.

It’s really easy. Write text with the text tool, press the “Esc” key (to escape text entry mode) and choose the text with the regular pointer tool (shortcut key “V”) if it’s not selected aleady. Then follow the steps as shown below.

Click the “Filters” button in the bottom panel:

And choose the filter of your desire (you can then adjust it to your liking).

You're a true friend. I was just about to re-instal my Photoshop 2. They do seem to have had trouble. I got this from their blog.

this update does sweet FA to fix the text issues reported here, can’t even install the workaround mentioned at the top of this post as the CS4 extension manager just crashes on install of said extension.

Seriously, FFS Adobe, sort your sh*t out! you’re just alienating your dedicated community of users!

Hopefully now sorted out.

What I really like is the solid shadow filter. With this you can easily create some of these “inset/outset” kind of text effects like in the navigation on the apple website or on http://metalabdesign.com/ (they actually used the CSS text-shadow property for the regular text below the main image so there it can only be seen in Firefox 3.5+ or Safari).

Oh and yes there have been problems with text shifting out of the “box” (no pun intended) but with the latest update this hasn’t happened to me anymore. Check for updates in Fireworks and it’ll show you if there’s any update available.

And P. S.: Fireworks has an own PNG format which stores info on all its layers and objects etc. This can be a little confusing because you should export your images if you’re using them on the web, not just press “save” and use the outcome PNG file. Raw Fireworks PNGs are much bigger in file size and not optimized for web (exactly because they store all the info) so always export and optimize them there. The outcome of this is a flattened file which you can use for websites etc.

Thanks again for the explanations. The site you mentioned has quite a lot of code there.
It would make me dizzy I think, trying to keep focussed. It's a nice interesting presentation. I especially like the slide show. Very professional.
The text effects are unusual. I must have a go after I am used to Fireworks.

I have normalised the .png. (http://exitfegs.co.uk/t2.html)
