Path explanation please...

Hi to all.
Please can someone explain how does the path is in PHP or in web programming?

I mean what is "." or "../" or "/" etc...

../ == up one directory level

/ == start from the web root

so, if I say $path="./" that mean does I'm in this directory but
if I say $path="../" than it is up one level and if
I say $path="/images/" then it means the directory of "images" on the web root?
