View Full Version : Resolved Remove the background of a jpg?
effpeetee 08-25-2009, 09:44 PM I have a jpg clip which has a blue background. Is it possible to remove the backgound and leave the image reasonably easily? I need the backgound to show through ie transparent. as a png.

Miracles sometimes happen, don't they?

Sorry, here it is (http://exitfegs.co.uk/menorahtest.jpg).
Now for the miracle. I need a transparent background.
It is going onto a light blue page and it has a white background which clashes.

Apostropartheid 08-26-2009, 11:39 AM JPEGs don't support transparency. I don't think this image is worth the effort; couldn't you just put a light border around it?
VIPStephan 08-26-2009, 12:42 PM There you go: http://www.primacom.net/~k6531190/images/menorahtest.png
Took 10 seconds to remove the background. However, there are these faint letters that one can’t remove easily.

Thanks again VIPStephan. Just what the doctor ordered. Miracles while you wait.
Is it something that I can do? I have Photoshop CS2 version9 and also Photoshop Elements.
Artistically I am a dead loss but I am not without reasonable hand skills. I was my church Organist until a few years ago.

VIPStephan 08-26-2009, 04:17 PM Well, I’m working with Fireworks but I guess you can do this with Photoshop as well. What I did was use the paint bucket tool set to the “erase” blend mode and tolerance value of 25 (so that the anti-aliased edges would be covered, too, to avoid a white halo) and then I filled (erased) the white area(s).
effpeetee 08-26-2009, 04:48 PM Thanks, I'll give it a whirl.
I'll report back later.

_Aerospace_Eng_ 08-26-2009, 06:36 PM Why does the image say "IC" on it? Where did you get it?
effpeetee 08-27-2009, 08:46 AM Aero,
I got it from a Christian site that is compltely free of charges. I can't remember which one. I went through so many.

effpeetee 08-27-2009, 08:53 AM seco,
My version of Photoshop (CS2 version9) would not let me erase the background and gave an error message which I cannot now remember.
I have just ordered Fireworks.

I think you could use the "magic wand tool" of photoshop with some "tolerance" value to select the white area and then "press Del"
effpeetee 08-27-2009, 09:26 AM Thanks abduraooft.
I have managed to do so with Photoshop.

My thanks to all of you for your invaluable help.

_Aerospace_Eng_ 08-27-2009, 12:07 PM Do you plan on catering to IE6? If you are, then you should know that IE6 doesn't support alphatransparency on pngs natively. You'll need to use some javascript to get it to work.

Thanks Aero.
The young lady seems satisfied as it is, but I wouldn't mind making it IE6 usable.
EDIT: I have done what Apostropartheid suggests below. It seems to be the best way out.

Apostropartheid 08-27-2009, 12:48 PM You could just put the blue background in the image. The JS seems a bit unnecessary here.

Now why didn't I think of that?
Does so in brackets. (http://exitfegs.co.uk/WTV.html)
