So what do you do when you have worked on a site and you think it looks good and everything is accessible and it follows good coding practices .... then you have to turn it over to the person who you made it for and they have no clue what they're doing?

They proceed to edit it with a wysiwyg editor and throw useless tags everywhere.
They add blinking text and annoying clashing highlights...

Do you just ... grit your teeth and walk away???

and what do I say if this person (with whom I am in regular contact) comes to me and asks why I don't put my name on it to advertise my services??

Is this just an occupational hazard I will have to live with?(not that it's my occupation I just volunteered to do it this once because they desperately needed help)

How frustrating.

I thought that only happens to me :)

You do just have to live with it. And I also don't
put my name on the site ... I just tell them that having
my name on it isn't that important to me.

I do tell them that whatever they edit or do to the site
after I'm done is up to them, and if they want me to repair
or alter things that fail, I will charge them a fee for doing that.

It's difficult to separate friends from business, but you have to
let them know that "it is what it is".

You give them a CMS with limited editing options. Concrete5 (http://www.concrete5.org/) seems to be very luser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luser) friendly. :D And if custom PHP/MySQL isn’t an option then CushyCMS (http://cushycms.com/) does the job very well.

P. S.: At least they used CSS and not the infamous <blink> element. ;-)
