Add to selection? [PS7]

Is it possible, to add to a selection in photoshop?

I don't get what you mean, can you make it more clearer as to what exactly you are wanting to do?

What are you trying to add, and to what selection?

Okay, say I want to select this smilie: http://silverpaw3d.com/smilies/uhh.gif and this smilies: http://silverpaw3d.com/smilies/sure.gif they are isolated so there's no way I can select them both at once assuming the image is flat. So can I select one, then the other, and then work as if I'd just made one selection?

An example; in the 3D studio max, you can select one vertex/edge/polygon/etc, then press [ctrl] while you select others you'd like to work with.

Photoshop is not good when it comes to that, and doesn't like it very much, so they don't allow you to do that.

They more "prefer" that you you work with two layers when it comes to having to seperate images on one canvas.

Actually, you can select multiple areas of an image (layer) in PS...

Select your area, then SHIFT+select (using the same tool - lasso, marque, crop, etc.) an additional area and they will be treated as one selection minus the external (non-selected) area.

Wierdly, that doesn't work in photoshop at all for me, never has.

When the selection tool is selected or the marquee tool, you can change the options in the top bar on the left. You can add/delete etc to the selection.

Actually, I should clarify that you don't have to use the same selection tool to do this...you could do the freehand lasso then switch to the polygonal lasso and it would work, the tool is semi-irrelevant.

You could also save the selection, deselect it, then select your other area to work with and do an 'add to selection' via the menu options in order to combine multiple selections without having to worry about keeping active selections viable.

Oh ya, many ways to add-to a selection, most already stated
When a selection is active, choose any other selecton tool (lasso, wand, marquee) and hold SHIFT (you will see a tiny plus-sign added to the cursor. Note: ALT will subtract and SHIFT+ALT will intersect
Use the optionbar. If a selection is active, choose any selection tool and look at the optionbar, there's four choices there that mimick the keyboard commands, but don't require keyboard use. Choosing one of those buttons 'locks' the selection tool you are using into that mode until the selection is deactivated.
Quick Mask. If you don't know how to use Photoshop's Quick Mask Mode, go find a tutorial and learn it NOW.
Use channels. Make a selection, save it as a channel. Make another selection, save IT as a channel. Ctrl+Shift-click both channels to select both areas.
And probably a few ways I'm not thinking of at the moment.
