Bibles are the best way to go:

By the way, this book is very good.

I have it for Dreamweaver MX, Flash MX, and Photoshop.

The series is great, so it gets a huge

Most books aren't worth it, unless you are looking to learn the actual physical process of doing something, or what certain commands do...but for graphic technique, they don't really hold up. Experimentation is the best way to learn how to work in your prog, battling, contests, chapters, etc. Books will help you to learn how to do the same boring effect over and over again, in only one way...sure, in the beginning, these types of instructions help, but in the end relying on them is far too limiting. However, as I said, if you want to learn how to technically do something or what something technically does, to get familiar with your program's commands and actions, then a book will get you started. But don't count on a book making you a good artist or teaching you anything beyond theory. This isn't like programming...this is creativity, the book won't give you that, but it can help you get the creativity from thought to pixel.

One tip: Never buy a book that was made by the software company. Example: never buy a book on PhotoShop by Adobe!! and Never buy a book on Windows by Microsoft. Same idea.

The BIBLE series rules and is even almost "fun" to read. Take it to the beach and learn something on your "vacation". lol :)
