Hi all, I installed bandwidth meter pro and noticed that my net bandwidth usage is incresing even when i dont use it. But there is no performance lag when i use it for download or other things ... but if my comp is idle still it shows that i am using my net.... Is it a virus? i have avast home edition and i scanned my whole system. I am currently on an unlimited plan so dont care much. But i want to findout what is causing it..
Can some one please tel if there is any software for identifying which programs on the comp are accessing the net at a given time? That way i can monitor my computer
Thanks in advance

How much bandwidth is it actually using?
As long as your computer is connected to the internet, it will send and recieve a few packets of data every now and then even when its sitting idle.
However if its using a fair amount then it could be piece of spyware or a trojan
Do an antivirus scan (making sure your virus dats are up to date) and run a spyware/malware scan with something like spybot/malwarebytes/super anti spyware etc

Avast could be looking for updates to its virus database. It does have another database that it tries to update when your system is idle. If you really want to be sure then try using Malware Bytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/). The free version is fine. Install, update, and do a full system scan.

Many programs these days perform automatic updates. Could be one of a number of programs calling home to see if there is anything new.

you could toss something like zomealarm's free firewall on and wait and see what is trying to get out
