Opening Images In Default Viewer

Hello,

Can someone tell me how to launch an image in the users default viewer?

In other words a user clicks on a image in a site and the default viewer for the system is used to view the image instead of another browser window.

afaik this is not possible; what you can do is inititiate a download instead of merely opening file as a link, using PHP (http://www.codingforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16385) or similar; that way your end user will get a "save/open" dialogue and then its their choice.
