I am looking to buy a domain from somebody who currently owns it. I was able to track down who ran the website, I sent him a message, and he sent me a message back asking how much I was willing to spend. He doesn't have anything on his site, so it's not like he's going to have to move a bunch of files to a new domain/lose PageRank. Any ideas on what a fair offer would be?

Thanks.

If it's a "good" name it's pretty much what the market will bear and how much you think it is worth to you. If it's an individual I'm be very careful.

It doesn't seem like a hugely popular domain choice (unlike drugs.com). The domain is "myfsj.com"

Look up how many more years it is registered for and then just pay the cost per year times that many years. .coms are about 8 or 9 dollars a year I think.

Will do. Also, can you guys think of any ways to ensure that I'm not screwed over in this transaction ie he doesn't cough up the domain? I'm thinking this will just be one of those times you just have to trust the person. Which I don't :D

Use an escrow service (http://www.google.com/q=escrow+service). Make sure you both agree on one you trust beforehand.

It really does depend on what the domain is worth.
The automatic valueation tools really are a stab in the dark and $9 xYears Reg is a pointless idea.
I have sold domains which have been registered 6 months for $xxxx.

You have to decide what the domain is worth to you and pay it. If its not enough its not enough. If it is enough you get the domain.

A domain is worth what a buyer is willing to pay for it.

Never rely on Automated domain appraisals, they are no good. However there is one script that i know of that is a bit recommendable >>> http://estibot.com
