View Full Version : unblock downloaded images

This happened before: every time I would right-click an image and save it, when I tried to open it later I would get a warning window asking me if I wanted to open it, with the option to not ask every time.

Eventually I found a way around this by going into the config page of Firefox and changing the DownloadManager scan setting to False.

Since the upgrade to 3.5, this nuisance is back - and my setting in DownloadManager is still set to False.

But maybe it's not Firefox, since the same thing happens when I download with Internet Explorer 7 - except I don't get the option of not asking me every time.

Now I am just really annoyed at this crap. I have a fully-functioning anti-virus program constantly running and constantly updated. Why do I need some phantom piece of crap function blocking images (images for god sake!) that "might" be harmful?

Please tell me how to "undo" this ridiculous thing....

You're talking about the browser? I'm talking about Windows.
What I mean is, when I view a webpage, it loads fine. I see a picture I want to download, so I right-click and Save Image. It saves to my hard drive. I double-click the saved image file and up pops a window (see attachment 1).

In the Properties dialogue box for the image, it gives the option to Unblock, under Security (see attachment 2).

Since this happens whether I download with FF or IE, I think it must be something in a recent Windows update that is messing with my system settings.

I am using Windows XP Home SP3. This problem occurred before but disappeared when I set Firefox to not scan downloads. It is still set that way, but the problem has re-appeared in the last week or two.

Somebody knows how to fix this. Please tell me!

Thanks!

A simple google (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=disable+security+warning+xp&meta=) pulled up the answer (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061107232556AAsBdFe).

Thanks. That would probably be incredibly helpful if I had the Group Policy Editor. I don't know what it is, never had any need for it previously and now when I type it in, Windows tells me I don't have it.
Any other way to get in there?

Did you type gpedit.msc, without the hyphens in the link? That person has an odd idea of what quotes are. If not, make sure you are on an administrator account.

What version of Windows are you using?

@oracleguy: I assume it's XP, because the screenshots he posted have the Luna UI. Also, I don't think this occurs under Vista and 7.

Yes, he's a bit confusing, but I typed in only the text part. I also just did a search for gpedit.msc and also for *.msc - it ain't here.
Although I know, I still double-checked the User section and yes, this is the only account and it is Administrator.

Windows XP Home SP3, as mentioned in the previous post. ;)

gpedit.msc won't show up in Search because it's a protected system file. Try opening it directly. It's usually located under %SystemRoot%\system32 (if Windows is installed on C:, this equates to C:\Windows\system32.)

I have my system set to show all files, etc. Also, I use "Everything" search program. It showed all the other .msc files when I searched for *.msc, but not gpedit.msc
Regardless, I checked the system32 folder and it is not there.

How about this method (http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/windows-xp/24759-open-file-security-warning.html)?

@CyanLight This is why I asked, AFAIK group policy editor is not apart of XP home edition.

@StickBody: Sorry I missed that you already said what it was.

Wow I just looked back here and TBH I hadn't heard of windows blocking images once they're already on your computer, sorry that i misunderstood, making a couple of notes myself for future use, I'm a *nix guy but who knows might need it on a win machine sometime

They aren't being blocked, it is just adding an extra security warning when you open certain filetypes from the Desktop. It might happen in other places but that's the only place I've seen it. I've never noticed it with images but most of the images I work with are JPEGs and PNGs not GIFs.

It happened with all image types. My example was of a gif, but it happened with jpgs and pngs as well.
