I'm redesigning a site for someone, I think the current design is over the top and hard to navigate but I think I might have gone a bit too far the other way with my design, can you tell me what you think?

*** EDIT ***
[My design is now up at Millenniumsound.co.uk but the old one is still on the old hosting account]

CURRENT DESIGN: http://www.millenniumsound.co.uk
OLD DESIGN: http://basic1.easily.co.uk/03B051/02E065/

Your one looks better, seeing as the first one looks like the works of a 14 year old who has just got their hand on Flash....

Mind you, the site is somewhat dark, and not very appealing.

The second one is much better - the second one contains something I can use, while the first one is a big white square that says "click here to get the plugin"

If you're going to use dropdown selectors for navigation, then make sure that

- you provide actual GO buttons

- your provide redundent links for non-javascript browsers

But otherwise I like it; it's a bit plain and "undesigned" - some pictures would be nice - but it's very easy to comprehend and navigate.

Definitely the new design.

You might also want to set a maximum width for the content -- the text lines get a little too long for easy reading on some pages when viewed with the browser maxed in high resolution.

And maybe a little color -- the feel of the current colors don't quite match the feel of the content.

The second one is much better.

Also I noticed you are coding in XHTML yet you didn't include the XHTML DTD. You should do that if you can.

There also is no link to get back to the front page that I could easily find. Also I think maybe you should move your disclaimer sentence to either the bottom of the page or onto each review page because it detracts from the site having it placed so promanently.

On a design note, brothercake touched on this, it seems rather monochrome however the usuability is quite good and it looks fine even at high res (1600x1200). Maybe make the top part with the title a good looking image. Just make sure you keep the file size reasonable and it should be fine.

i have been thinking about the colors being a bit boring, any suggestions ill try out, i think ill replace the top text "millennium sound" with a title graphic.

someone said I should provide a go button with thedropdowns, why?

I think someone took a wrong turn and ended up in dull city. :(

I prefer the first one, it's amateur work (says me, lol) but it has colour and is easily navigable. The second is very dull and the colours drab, it has no life. I dislike the title bar, the way the text wraps across the whole screen and the visible stats at the bottom.

You need buttons with your dropdowns because in some browsers the menus won't work without them.

why is there an enter page on the first one?
(dislikes flash sites)

the second one is better, more color though would be nice.

Hmmm, regurgitating was has been said before:

the original site annoyed me almost instantly because of two (!) pointless flash intro pages after oneanother, i didn't care too much about the navigation, especially the "mystery meat" aspect, and the use of browser real estate was not very efficient.

But!

It was colorful and appealing to look at.

Your version's layout looks clean and sharp, navigation is clear and easy (although i'm not a fan of form style dropdowns), and the window is used almost to the maximum.

But!

The color use is... well, non-existant, and the window is too full, as was mentioned before.

I'd suggest putting in a bit of visual interest and color, increasing margins to somewhat free up the design, and personally I'd change the navigation completely: either get a real DHTML dropdown menu system, or if you really want to keep it as basic as the rest of the design simply stick to a two-layer links based navigation. Oh, and add a "home" link somewhere.

well, i do not really like either of the designs, but the new one definately has more potential. bring it out by putting in some colour, adding perhaps a logo graphic rather than big, bold, white-on-black text... give the design some space... perhaps limit the size of that rather huge chunk o' text to three quarters of what it is now...

as a personal opinion... i really think you should get rid of that navigation system, i mean, its helpful when you want to get around a site quickly... but when youve got so many its abit overkill.

seach this forum for "colour scheme" to find some cool links...

i would stay around 3 - 4 colors, hmm what about dark gray like you have, but add in some orange, i think orange looks good with gray. *shrug* :)

what would you make orange? the background, table background?

I'm no fan of orange; how 'bout replacing the black header background with a - darkened version of - the "stage scene" as seen on the original site, and put the header text in yellow?
Furthermore, lighten up the grey a lot, or maybe better replace it with a whiteish, hazy color tone; yellow again, or its complement, or something that goes with the stage scene image.

I like the functionality of the new design, but think the art direction could use a boost. Things to consider:
1) Reduce table size.
2) Change colors: border outside of table to cccccc. Add 99cc33 as accent
3)Reduce height bottom black border. Also add thin strip of color (99cc33)
4) Change headline/caption - reduce font size - headline in serif and tagline in italic sans serif - change "thanks for visiting" to "Such and such's (town name) connection to local talent"
5) left justify text, and add small cell to right of text. In that cell ad graphic for interest - perhaps a featured band of the month.

ok anything after that first one is gonna look excellent! :D That's the sort of site that gives flash a bad name hehe. I think your new design is pointing in a much more useful direction however if you made some snazzy image/logo for the top I think it would pull together a bit better. Personally I like you color choice - just needs that sweet graphic mounted up top.

good luck!

Someone tried to follow the link on the post at the start of this thread, I know because someone hit the 404 page with this page as HTTP_REFERER, I have now edited the links to make it correct.

* EDITED DUE TO ME BEING DUMB AND HAVING BAD GRAMMAR *

It's just a little long to load (every page...)
And I don't like the feel of it, don't ask me what's causing this, I don't know..

i think the flash one is better, not that im saying flash has used well at all. But the new site has hardly taken any great steps forward from the original in its design.

ok it may be more accessible and quicker to navigate??( if the menus worked better) but i just wouldnt want to look at it for any length of time, its just like a spreadsheet, zzzzzz.
