Hello

I need advice on which programming languages to use in combination with an sql datebase.
This is not for a homework, it's a personal project, and given the fact that I'm not a real programmer, coder, I am seeking advice on this subject.

I first opted for Visual Basic, but some friends (who are programmers) recommended Java or C sharp.

The size of my project is ...well I don't know how to size it, it's going to be an online 2d tick based strategy, which will hopefully host a couple of thousand players / round.

I could really use some advice, since I can't afford a coder right now, hiring an artist and buying the licenses is enough of a pain allready.

Have a nice day and thanks for your time

I would recommend java since I am a java programmer and most of the time active on codingforums so you can benefit from my experience.

The ball is yours.

You can use a variety of programming languages to work with a database. The language really doesn't matter that much, the concepts on how you use a database are the same. That applies to programming in general, the concepts is what is important, the language is just a tool.

If you have any experience in one particular language like VB, go with that. VB.net and C#, are similar in the sense that they both have the same libraries you can draw on, they just have different syntax. I've done both, I prefer C# because I like the C style syntax.

Can you give more details on what your program is going to do? Is this going to be a desktop application or a web application?

It's basickly going to be a desktop app, a game client which should connect remotely to my sql server... I'm having difficulties establishing that connection, and figuring out a way of making thousands of users that could use the datebase.

My only programming history is with borland pascal and the basics of java (which seems too hard for my understanding).
The reason why I would choose vb is because it looks simple enough, and has most of the objects I need.

Since there aren't so many differences between c# and vb I'm going to have to make up my mind pretty soon, and start working on my project...

Thank you for the quick replies, I might come back soon with more questions.

Java and c# will be little heavy and VB is simple but not advanced. So based on the project u can choose the language. If it small project use VB.. more simple...
