help with my server!

i have just downloaded and installed an apache webserver, and i am trying to install os commerce (www.oscommerce.com). however, when i try to install it (http://localhost/catalog/install/index.php), the following message occurs:
FATAL ERROR: register_globals is disabled in php.ini, please enable it!

does anyone know what this means (i am a newbie)
i would very much appreciate any relies, thankyou!

look in your php.ini file

search for register_globals

change it to register_globals = on
