Hi

Can anyone give me tips or URLs with more info on how one goes about planning a website on paper etc and conducting interviews before the initial web site design?

get some large paper or the back of wall paper, plan the structure like


main page -> joke
->games ->adventure ->other

and so on

It's geared towards a professional web site, but it sounds to me like that's what you're looking for.

I've found the book Principles of Web Design by Farkas and Farkas useful, particularly since it focuses on design concepts rather than coding.

look at other sites which are similar. See how they're designed, and what you like and don't like about it. Design the navigation on paper (if you want) and then make a simple working model on your computer and see if its easy to use. If it is, then carry on from there and decide what all do you need to make the site efficient and better looking (just html needed or graphics, php, javascripting, asp, ssi...)
