Using photoshop 6's gradient as an eraser not a filler

Using photoshop 6, if I’ve got two layers which overlap, can I use a transparent gradient to blend them into each other… that is, is there a way to set the fade to erase the layer in a gradient, revealing part of the layer below?

If your focus is on layer 1 there is no way to alter (fade erase) layer 2. Why don't you just make the gradient one layer?

I think I’ll try and rephrase that… What I’m trying to do is erase along a gradient so I can fade a layer away into transparency and thus revealing whatever’s beneath it gradually (be it the background or another layer beneath it), kind of like this image. The grey stone on the left blends into the paper on the right.

Yep, that's the effect I'm trying to achive, and it's easier to show it than articulate it.:)

Use the quick mode mast. Push q on your keyboard, than select the layer and have the gradient tool open. Draw a gradient over the top layer, than push q again the keyboard and hit delete.

Thats a basic description of what you'll want to do. Play around with it some.

Couldn't you also make a selection around the area you want to fade, feather that selection, then hit delete? That should do the trick.
